Pressure-balance valves also carry an adjustable limit stop, which your installer calibrates so the handle cannot rotate into dangerously hot territory. A genuinely Canadian detail: that stop deserves a seasonal check, because the cold water reaching a Winnipeg or Quebec City home in February is far colder than in July, shifting where comfortably hot sits on the dial.

The trade-offs are simple. Most pressure-balance valves feed a single outlet, so they suit a shower head, or a head plus hand shower through a diverter trim, rather than a full body-spray system. And because one handle governs both jobs, you cannot reduce the flow without also nudging the temperature. For a straightforward shower none of that matters, which is why this is the most common and most affordable valve type.

Thermostatic valves: temperature memory and multi-outlet flexibility

A thermostatic valve separates the two jobs. One control sets temperature, another sets volume. Inside sits a thermostatic element that expands and contracts to hold the exact temperature you dialled in, regardless of pressure swings or seasonal supply changes. Set your preferred temperature once and the shower greets you at it every morning. That temperature memory is the feature people fall in love with.

Thermostatic valves also tend to offer higher flow capacity, which is why they anchor most multi-outlet showers: a rain head plus a hand shower plus body sprays, for example. Pair the valve with volume controls or a diverter and each outlet gets its own on, off and flow adjustment while the temperature stays locked. The honest downsides: thermostatic setups cost more and occupy more wall space once separate volume controls enter the picture. For a one-head shower they are a luxury, a lovely one, but a luxury.

  • Diverter valves route water among outlets from a single control. A two-way diverter switches between two outlets, a three-way among three, and some offer positions that run two outlets at once.
  • Volume controls are simple on-off-and-flow valves, one per outlet, mounted downstream of the mixing valve.

A diverter with shared positions lets certain outlets run together, the rain head and hand shower for instance, while a non-shared diverter runs strictly one outlet at a time. The platform lock-in: why the valve dictates your trim

Here is the part that surprises people. Shower valves and trims are not interchangeable across brands. The rough-in valve buried in your wall accepts only trim engineered for that valve platform, so choosing the valve effectively chooses your brand for the life of the wall.   • Certification marks. Look for CSA or cUPC marks, which indicate the valve is certified for installation in Canada.
  • Scald protection. Both pressure-balance and thermostatic valves provide it. Confirm the details with your plumber, since provincial and municipal codes vary.

Do I need a thermostatic valve for a shower with one head?

Can I mix a valve from one brand with trim from another?

What happens to my shower when someone flushes a toilet?
