- Trim coverage. The footprint of the escutcheon plate and handle that mount on the finished wall. This determines what hole the trim can hide, which matters enormously in renovations.

The good news is that supply connections are genuinely standardized. - The existing valve, if renovating. Measure from the centre of the current valve to the finished wall, note where the supply lines enter, and photograph the open wall if you ever have it exposed. Future you will be grateful.

Every rough-in valve ships with a plastic plaster guard, and it is more than packaging. It acts as a depth gauge for the acceptable range of finished wall surfaces and protects the cartridge during construction. Keep it on until tile day.
Beyond depth, think about access and surroundings. A valve set too deep leaves the trim sleeve unable to reach the cartridge; too shallow and the escutcheon will not sit flush against the wall. Look for the minimum and maximum depth from finished wall, the port sizes and connection types, the flow rate at a stated pressure, and the certification marks.
