Walk through any showroom or scroll any product page and you'll see shower glass listed at 6mm, 8mm or 10mm — sometimes as 1/4", 5/16" or 3/8" if the spec sheet leans American. It's tempting to assume thicker means safer and to pay up accordingly. It doesn't. Every legitimate shower door sold in Canada uses tempered safety glass no matter the thickness. The real questions are different: how does thickness change the way a door feels, what hardware it demands, how heavy it is, and what it does to your budget? Here's the honest breakdown.

The short answer: thickness follows the style of enclosure

You rarely pick a glass thickness in isolation. You pick a door style, and the thickness comes with it:

  • Framed doors: typically 4–6mm. The aluminum frame carries the structural load, so the glass can be thin and light.
  • Semi-frameless doors: usually 6mm. Partial framing still supports the glass along the critical edges.
  • Frameless doors and panels: 8mm or 10mm. With no frame, the glass itself is the structure, and it needs the rigidity.

Safety is settled before thickness enters the picture

All shower glass — 6mm, 8mm or 10mm — must be tempered safety glass. Tempering heat-treats the glass so that if it ever breaks, it crumbles into small, relatively blunt pebbles instead of shattering into large shards. Stability and feel. This is the big one. A thin panel with no frame flexes and wobbles when you push it; an 8mm or 10mm panel feels planted. A 10mm frameless door closes with a soft, weighty confidence that people read as luxury — and honestly, that perception is a legitimate part of what you're paying for.

Hardware. Thicker glass is heavier glass, and every extra kilogram hangs off the hinges. Frameless doors in 8mm and especially 10mm need hinges rated for the load and, critically, solid blocking behind the wall finish to anchor into. That's a planning detail worth settling before tile goes up, not after.

Weight. Glass weighs roughly 2.5 kg per square metre for every millimetre of thickness. A full-height 10mm door panel can easily reach 35–45 kg — a genuine two-person install, and part of why frameless enclosures cost more to fit.

Cost. More glass, beefier hardware and a heavier install all add up. The step from 6mm framed to 10mm frameless is a real budget jump, and it's fair to ask whether your bathroom needs it.

Framed and semi-frameless: don't over-buy

If a framed or semi-frameless door suits your bathroom, 6mm glass is exactly right. The frame does the structural work, the door stays light on its rollers or hinges, and the whole unit is easier to install and easier on the budget. Frameless: 8mm is the floor, 10mm is the feel

Once the frame disappears, the glass must be stiff enough not to flex, rattle or sag on its hinges. That's why 8mm is the practical minimum for frameless — 6mm simply isn't rigid enough to hang unframed at shower-door sizes.

Between 8mm and 10mm, the honest trade-off looks like this:

  • Choose 8mm for standard-width hinged doors and typical enclosures. It's rigid enough, meaningfully lighter on the hinges, and less expensive. Most people who choose it never think about it again.
  • Choose 10mm for wide fixed panels, tall walk-in screens, or anywhere a large sheet of glass stands with minimal support — the extra stiffness genuinely matters there. On a small hinged door, the benefit of 10mm is mostly that substantial, high-end feel. Real, but a feel upgrade rather than a functional one.

Easy-clean coatings: usually worth it

Many doors offer a factory-applied hydrophobic coating — often called easy-clean or a similar trade name. It makes the surface slicker so water sheets off instead of beading and drying into mineral spots. In hard-water regions — much of the Prairies and plenty of Ontario — that's the difference between a quick squeegee and regular scrubbing.

Two honest caveats. First, no coating makes glass self-cleaning; you'll still want a squeegee habit. Second, coatings wear over years and abrasive cleaners wear them faster. Factory-applied treatments generally outlast aftermarket sprays, and as a modest add-on at purchase, they're one of the easier "yes" decisions in a shower order.

Plan the whole enclosure, not just the glass

A great door on a poor base is still a poor shower.
