A bathroom tap that dribbles while the kitchen sink runs full blast is not a plumbing emergency, and it is usually not a shopping trip either. Low water pressure at one fixture almost always traces back to a short list of causes you can check in order in an afternoon with a towel and an adjustable wrench. Most of the time the fix costs nothing, and when it does, you will know exactly what you are buying and why.
Step zero: prove it is really just one fixture
Run every other tap in the house, hot and cold, upstairs and down. This five minute test tells you which half of the plumbing system to suspect.

If the whole house is weak, deal with the supply side first, because no fixture level fix will help. If one fixture alone is weak, everything upstream is innocent.
Pressure and flow are not the same problem
Pressure is force, measured in psi or kPa. Flow is volume, in litres per minute. They fail differently: a clogged aerator leaves full pressure behind the tap and almost no flow out of it, while a corroded pipe flows fine into a bucket but collapses the moment anything restricts it. Modern fixtures are also flow limited by design, and a water efficient shower head will never out-pour an older unrestricted one no matter how healthy your plumbing is. Cause one: the aerator, always check it first
The aerator is the small screened insert threaded into the tip of a faucet spout, and it is the most common culprit by a wide margin. Unscrew it by hand or with taped pliers and look at the screens. Much of the Prairies and parts of Ontario run very hard water, and mineral scale can close an aerator down within a year or two; a soak in white vinegar dissolves most of it. The other classic cause is grit: after any plumbing work, debris travels downstream and the aerator screen is the first thing it hits. Rinse, reinstall, test. Pull-down kitchen faucets hide a similar screen inside the spray head, so check there too. Damaged aerators are standardized and cheap to replace.
Cause two: shutoff valves that are not fully open
Next, look under the sink or behind the toilet at the small angle stops feeding the fixture. These get nudged during vanity installs, closed for renovations and reopened halfway, or simply seize with age. Older multi-turn stops can also fail internally, so the handle turns while the gate inside never fully lifts. Open both valves completely and retest; if one will not open fully or weeps at the stem, replace it with a quarter-turn ball style stop. A weak hot side with a strong cold side points straight at the hot stop or its line.
Cause three: debris in the cartridge
Single handle faucets and shower valves meter water through a cartridge with narrow internal passages, the second place travelling grit likes to lodge. The telltale sign is flow that dropped suddenly, often right after municipal work on your street or soldering in your basement, sometimes with temperature control acting strangely too. The fix is to shut off the water, pull the cartridge, flush everything, and reinstall or replace. Established brands such as Riobel, Kohler and Aquabrass keep genuine cartridges available across Canada, and thermostatic valves usually have inlet screens worth cleaning while you are in there.
Cause four: kinked or crushed supply lines
Braided stainless connectors are flexible, not indestructible. A line that was too long and looped tightly, or one pinched when the vanity was pushed back against the wall, will choke flow permanently. Shine a light behind the fixture and follow each line from the stop to the tailpiece. If you find a kink, replace the line rather than straightening it, because the inner tube stays partially collapsed even when the braid outside looks fine. This is a ten minute swap.
When the fixture is innocent
If you have cleaned the aerator, opened the stops, inspected the lines and even swapped the cartridge, the fixture is cleared. What remains is the pipe feeding it. In older housing stock, from prewar duplexes in Halifax to 1950s bungalows in Vancouver, galvanized steel branch lines corrode shut from the inside, and the fixture at the end of a rotten run gets a trickle while everything else seems fine. A distinctly Canadian clue: a line in an exterior wall that partially freezes shows pressure that drops in a cold snap and recovers with the thaw. None of this can be fixed at the fixture, and new hardware on a corroded branch line just moves good money onto bad pipe.
When to call a plumber, honestly
Call a licensed plumber when the four causes above are eliminated, when galvanized or in-wall piping is the suspect, when well equipment is involved, or simply when pulling a cartridge is further than you want to go. An hour of professional diagnosis is cheaper than replacing fixtures on a guess. Repiping is also permit territory: plumbing across Canada follows the National Plumbing Code as adopted and amended by each province, so in-wall work belongs with someone licensed for your jurisdiction. Frequently asked questions
Will a new faucet fix low water pressure?
Only if the old faucet itself is the blockage, usually a fouled cartridge or heavily scaled passages. If the real cause is a half-closed stop, a kinked supply line or corroded pipe, the new faucet will run exactly as weak as the old one. Diagnose first, then shop.
Why is only my hot water weak at one tap?
Hot side weakness at a single fixture points to the hot shutoff valve, the hot supply line or the hot inlet of the cartridge. If hot is weak at every fixture, look at the water heater instead. Hot lines also scale faster than cold in hard water areas because heat drives minerals out of solution, so the hot side often clogs first.
Do water-saving fixtures cause low pressure?
No. They limit flow, not pressure, and a well engineered low flow shower head is designed to feel strong at its rated output. If a new fixture performs far below its rating, suspect a plugged screen or a partly closed stop before blaming the design.
How often should I clean aerators in hard water?
A vinegar soak once or twice a year keeps screens clear, and it is a five minute job per faucet. If you are clearing heavy scale every few months, that is worth a water softener conversation.
