What hard water actually does to your fixtures
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium. Every droplet that dries on a faucet leaves those minerals behind as a spot, and every litre that passes through leaves a little scale inside the fixture too. On the surface, that means haze and spotting. Inside, it means buildup slowly closing off aerators, shower head nozzles and valve passages. The first symptoms are usually a weak or sputtering stream, a spray pattern that shoots sideways, or a hand shower dribbling from half its face.
The spots start out cosmetic. Real damage comes from scale inside moving parts, and from attacking the spots with harsh cleaners that strip or etch the finish. The second one ruins more faucets than the water ever does.
First rule: know your finish before you clean
White vinegar dissolves mineral scale beautifully, which is why it appears in every cleaning tip online. The part those tips skip: acid does not care whether it is dissolving limescale or attacking the finish underneath. Before you reach for the bottle, identify what you own.

The aerator soak, step by step
The aerator, the small screened insert at the faucet tip, is the first thing hard water clogs. Cleaning it takes ten minutes and often restores full flow.
- Unthread the aerator by hand. If it is stuck, grip it with a rubber glove, or wrap pliers in masking tape to protect the finish.
- Take a photo of the part order as you disassemble.
- Soak the insert and screen in half white vinegar, half warm water for 30 to 60 minutes. Keep the finished outer housing out of the soak unless it is plain chrome or stainless.
- Scrub with an old toothbrush, clear stubborn holes with a toothpick, and rinse well.
- Reassemble and thread it back on hand-tight.
Pull-down spray heads on kitchen faucets often have flexible rubber nozzles: rub them with your thumb under running water and most scale pops off. A better routine: remove the head, rest it face-down in a shallow dish of diluted vinegar for half an hour, rinse and reinstall. Glass shower doors deserve their own routine
Glass is where hard water does permanent harm. Mineral deposits left long enough bond to the surface and can etch it, and no cleaner reverses etching. The defence is boring but effective: a squeegee after every shower, thirty seconds, done. For the weekly clean, diluted vinegar is safe on the glass itself, but keep it off aluminum frames, hinges and coated handles; wipe the hardware with soapy water instead.
