Workstation sinks have earned their popularity honestly. A deep single bowl with a built-in ledge that carries cutting boards, colanders and drying racks turns the sink from the place where dishes pile up into the place where dinner actually gets made. But because these sinks are larger, heavier and more integrated with the countertop than a standard kitchen sink, installing one involves a few extra decisions. None of them are mysterious. Here is what actually drives the effort, whether you are renovating in Vancouver, Regina, Montreal or Halifax.
Why a workstation sink installs differently
Three things separate a workstation sink from an ordinary bowl. First, the integrated ledge: the accessories only glide properly if the sink sits square and level, and if the countertop cutout leaves the right reveal around the rim. Second, size and weight: most workstation models are generous single bowls in heavy-gauge stainless steel or granite composite, so the cabinet below needs to be wide enough and, in some cases, reinforced. Third, depth: workstation bowls tend to run deep, which affects where the drain lands and how much room is left for the trap and any under-sink extras.
None of this makes the job exotic. It just means the planning happens before the sink goes in, not after.
Site prep: the cabinet and countertop do most of the deciding
The single biggest factor in how much work the install becomes is what you are putting the sink into.
- Existing countertop, same-size cutout: the easy end of the scale. Swapping a top-mount sink for a top-mount workstation model with a compatible footprint is a manageable afternoon project for a confident DIYer.
- Existing stone countertop, different cutout: effort rises sharply. Enlarging a cutout in granite or quartz is specialist work with specialist tools, and not every fabricator will modify a top in place.
- New countertop: paradoxically the simplest path. The fabricator templates around your exact sink, cuts the reveal precisely, and often mounts an undermount sink to the slab before installation. The sink itself adds very little extra effort to the project.
Cabinet width matters too. Every manufacturer publishes a minimum base cabinet size for each model; check it against your actual cabinet, not the one on the plan. And because a large bowl full of water is genuinely heavy, undermount installs rely on proper support rails or brackets rather than adhesive alone.
Plumbing: usually adjustment, occasionally relocation
Most workstation sink installs reuse the supply and drain rough-ins already in the wall. What changes is the geometry under the cabinet.
Deep bowls push the drain connection lower, which can mean reworking the trap arm so everything still slopes correctly to the existing stub-out. Rear-offset drains, common on workstation models because they free up cabinet storage, shift the trap toward the back of the cabinet. If you are keeping a dishwasher tie-in or adding a garburator, the lower drain height is the detail to check first, since it decides whether the existing rough-in works as is.
Across Canada, the National Plumbing Code sets the general framework, but the rules that actually govern your kitchen are provincial and municipal, so confirm locally before moving a drain. Look for CSA or cUPC certification marks on faucets, drains and supply components; reputable brands carry them as a matter of course. And if your sink sits on an exterior wall, as many Canadian kitchens do, this is the moment to make sure supply lines are properly insulated. Electrical: only if you add extras
The sink itself needs no wiring. But workstation setups often invite additions such as a garburator or an instant hot water tap, and each one needs a properly protected outlet under the sink. If one does not exist, that is licensed electrician territory in every province, and it is far easier to run wire while the cabinet is empty than after the plumbing is back in place.
When DIY is realistic, and when it is not
Reasonable DIY: a like-for-like top-mount swap in a laminate or butcher block counter, with the drain and supplies staying where they are. If you can plumb a trap and seal a rim, this is within reach.
Borderline: an undermount replacement where the old sink detaches cleanly and the new one matches the cutout. Possible, but supporting a heavy bowl overhead while fastening it is a two-person job at minimum, and a failed mount is an expensive lesson.
Pro territory: new or modified stone cutouts, apron-front conversions that require cabinet modification, any drain or vent relocation, and any electrical additions. Note also that some provinces restrict who may legally perform plumbing work; in Quebec in particular, plumbing is generally the domain of licensed contractors, so plan accordingly.

Where the sink fits in a renovation sequence
- Choose the sink before the countertop is templated. This rule prevents most problems. The fabricator needs the exact model on hand, or at least its certified spec drawing, to cut the reveal correctly.
- Decide faucet and accessory holes at template time. Faucet, soap dispenser, hot water tap: every hole is drilled at fabrication, not after.
- Make rough-in changes while the cabinet is open. Drain height, outlet additions and supply insulation are all easiest before the countertop goes on.
- Order early. Workstation sinks ship across Canada without drama, but a countertop template date with no sink on site stalls the whole schedule. Build in delivery time, especially outside major centres.
Choosing a sink with installation in mind

Sometimes. If the new sink is top-mount and its footprint covers the existing cutout, yes, and it is a reasonable DIY project. If your counter is stone and the cutout needs enlarging, treat it as fabricator work, and get an opinion before buying the sink rather than after.
