Before you order it, answer one practical question: can your water heater actually fill it with comfortably hot water? Many homeowners find out on the first bath night, when the tap runs lukewarm halfway up. The math is simple, and every shortfall has a known fix.

How a bath actually uses hot water

A comfortable bath sits a little above body temperature, while your water heater stores or produces water considerably hotter. The tub is filled with a blend, mostly hot tempered with cold, so plan on roughly two thirds of the fill volume coming from the hot side.

Two details make the real number kinder than it first looks. Listed capacity is usually measured to the overflow drain, and nobody fills that high. And your body displaces a surprising amount of water, so a realistic fill is often noticeably smaller than the brochure figure.

Step 1: find your tub's realistic hot water demand
