The three numbers that decide fit

Every sconce listing worth trusting gives you at least three dimensions, and they do different jobs.

  • Width: the widest point of the fixture, usually the shade or the arms rather than the backplate. Width decides how much wall the sconce visually occupies and how close it can sit to a mirror edge, a window casing or a corner.
  • Height: the top of the fixture to the bottom. Tall linear bath bars and candle-style sconces can run well past 45 centimetres, while a compact cylinder sconce might be under 15.

  4. For pairs, measure box to box. Note the exact centre-to-centre distance so neither shade crowds the glass.
  5. Note the ceiling height. An up-light under a low bulkhead throws a hot spot; the same fixture on a 2.7 metre wall looks intentional.

  • Mounting height: most sconces read well with the fixture centre somewhere around 150 to 170 centimetres off the floor, roughly eye level. Vanity sconces are usually centred close to the height of the faces using the mirror, so adjust for your household rather than a chart.
  • Beside a mirror: leave a visible gap of a few centimetres between the shade and the mirror edge so the pair looks deliberate, not squeezed.

  • Shopping by width alone. The listing photo shows the fixture straight on, so projection never registers until the box arrives.

  • Ignoring the backplate. The backplate has to cover the junction box completely. A tiny designer backplate over a dented old box means drywall repair.
  • Forgetting the lamping. Some candle-style sconces list height without the bulb. An exposed lamp adds real height and changes the look.
