Step out of the shower on a February morning in Winnipeg or Quebec City and you understand why towel warmers have moved from hotel indulgence to practical upgrade in Canadian bathrooms. A warm towel is the obvious payoff, but a good warmer also dries towels between uses, which means less mustiness and less frequent laundering. The complication is that "towel warmer" covers two very different product families: electric and hydronic. They look similar on the wall, but they are installed, controlled and costed in completely different ways.

The two families at a glance

An electric towel warmer generates its own heat. Inside the rails there is either a dry heating element or a sealed heat-transfer fluid warmed by one, and the unit simply needs electricity: a nearby outlet or a hardwired connection. A hydronic towel warmer produces no heat on its own. It is plumbed into your home's hydronic heating loop, the same boiler-fed system that might run in-floor heat or radiators, and warm water circulating through the rails does the work.

That single difference drives everything else. Electric models are retrofit-friendly bathroom accessories. Hydronic models are effectively small radiators, which makes them new-build or gut-renovation territory, and only in homes with boiler-based heat.

Electric towel warmers: the retrofit favourite

Electric is where most Canadian buyers land, and it splits into two hookup styles:

  • Plug-in: the warmer comes with a cord and plugs into a standard outlet. Installation is mounting hardware and a level. It is the obvious choice for renters, condos and any bathroom where opening walls is off the table, with a visible cord as the trade-off.
  • Hardwired: the warmer connects to a junction box concealed behind it. The result is clean, cord-free and permanent, and it can run off a wall switch or timer. You will need a licensed electrician, and depending on your province, a permit and inspection.

Controls have come a long way. Many electric models offer built-in timers, adjustable temperature or programmable schedules, so the warmer runs for the morning rush and shuts itself off. Operating draw is modest, far below a space heater, and a timer keeps it lower still.

Hydronic towel warmers: for heating loops and new builds

Hydronic warmers are standard equipment in much of Europe. In Canada they make sense in one situation: your home is heated by a boiler, or you are building or renovating with hydronic in-floor heat, and you can tee a towel warmer into that loop. Done well, the result is elegant. No electrical connection, no cord, and the warmer doubles as a real radiator that contributes meaningful heat to the room, a welcome trait through a Prairie winter.

The trade-offs are structural. Supply and return lines must be roughed in behind the wall, so this decision belongs at the framing stage, not after the tile is up. Heat output needs to be matched to your loop by whoever designs the heating system. And because the warmer only runs when the heating runs, it typically goes cold in summer unless your installer sets up a dedicated loop. The National Plumbing Code and provincial amendments govern the details, so defer to your hydronic contractor and local requirements.

Bar count and towel capacity

Once you have picked a family, size the unit like the appliance it is. Bar count is the honest spec: more bars means more towels warming at once and better airflow between them, which is what actually dries a towel rather than just heating the top layer.

As a rule of thumb, a compact unit with a handful of bars suits a powder room or an ensuite used by one or two people.   • Mount it where a wet hand naturally reaches: near the shower or tub exit, but outside the wet zone itself. Electrical devices near tubs and showers are restricted under the Canadian Electrical Code as adopted in your province, so let your electrician confirm clearances.
  • Anchor into blocking or studs. A loaded ladder warmer carries real weight.
  • Most quality units run warm rather than scorching, but with small children in the house, check the manufacturer's surface temperature and mounting height guidance.

If you are upgrading an existing bathroom, the answer is almost always electric: plug-in if you want it done this weekend, hardwired if you want it done permanently.
