Shutoff Valve Types: The Unsung Heroes Under Your Sink

Every faucet, toilet and dishwasher in your home depends on a small valve that almost nobody looks at until something goes wrong. Shutoff valves, which plumbers usually call stops, sit under sinks and behind toilets, and their only job is to let you isolate one fixture without cutting water to the whole house. When a faucet cartridge fails late on a Sunday, that valve is the difference between a quick fix and a flooded cabinet. This guide covers the main shutoff valve types, how they connect to Canadian plumbing, and what to check before you order new ones alongside a faucet or toilet.

Multi-turn versus quarter-turn stops

The older design is the multi-turn stop, also called a compression or globe stop. A rubber washer on a threaded stem screws down against a seat, and you turn the oval handle several rotations to close it. The trade-off is that the washer hardens and the stem packing dries out over years of sitting still, so a valve that has not been turned in a decade often will not close fully, or drips from the stem the moment you touch it.

Quarter-turn stops use a small ball valve inside the body. A 90-degree twist of the lever moves it from open to closed, with no washer to compress and very little to wear. They cost a bit more and the lever needs clearance in a crowded cabinet, but they are far more likely to work when you actually need them. For any new install or replacement this is the type to choose.

Angle stops versus straight stops

Body shape depends on where the pipe comes from. If the supply stubs out of the wall behind the sink, an angle stop turns the flow 90 degrees so the supply line can run up to the faucet. If the pipe comes up through the floor, a straight stop keeps the line running the same direction. Wall-hung and pedestal sinks almost always use angle stops, while some older homes in the Prairies and the Maritimes have floor stub-outs that call for straight stops. If you are moving to a wall-mount vanity, expect the plumber to relocate the stub-outs into the wall so the stops sit inside the cabinet.

Connection types: matching the valve to your pipe

The inlet must match the pipe coming out of the wall, and the outlet must match the supply line to the fixture. Common inlets in Canada:

  • Compression: a brass ferrule and nut squeeze onto copper pipe. No soldering, easy to replace, and the most common retrofit choice on half-inch copper.
  • Sweat (solder): soldered directly to copper. Permanent and compact, but it needs a torch and a drained line, so it is usually a plumber's job.
  • Push-fit: pushes onto clean copper, PEX or CPVC and grips with an internal ring. Fast and forgiving, though the pipe end must be cut square and deburred.
  • PEX crimp, clamp or expansion: for homes plumbed in PEX, which includes most new construction from British Columbia to Newfoundland. The style must match your plumber's tool.

On the outlet side, most faucet and toilet supply lines sold in Canada use a 3/8-inch compression connection, which is why nearly every stop has that outlet. Some toilets and older faucets differ, so check the supply line that came with your fixture before assuming.

Single, dual and three-way outlets

A kitchen sink usually needs more than two outlets. The cold stop often feeds the faucet plus a dishwasher, and increasingly a water filter or fridge line. A dual-outlet stop handles two of these from one valve, and a three-way stop with separate shutoffs lets you isolate the dishwasher without losing the faucet. Materials, finishes and certification

Look for a solid brass body. Because these valves carry drinking water, they should be lead-free brass with a recognized certification mark for the Canadian market, generally CSA or cUPC. Check the listing for that mark rather than assuming. Canadian-market brands such as OS&B, an Ontario manufacturer of drains, traps and supply components, and Mountain Plumbing, known for decorative under-sink hardware in matching finishes, both play here. Finish hardly matters inside a closed cabinet, but on a pedestal, console or vessel sink installation, a stop in brushed nickel, matte black or brushed gold that matches the faucet is worth the small premium.

Cold-climate considerations

Stops under a sink on an exterior wall, common in older kitchens from Winnipeg to Quebec City, are the first fittings to freeze in a cold snap because the closed cabinet blocks warm room air. Opening the doors during extreme cold and choosing brass over plastic both help. If you own a cottage or seasonal property that gets winterized, quarter-turn stops at every fixture make the fall drain-down and spring start-up far faster.

When to replace your stops

The best time to replace stops is whenever you already have the supply line off. Replace them if they are original multi-turn stops that have never been changed, if the handle will not turn or water still flows when closed, if water beads at the packing nut, or if the outlet does not match the supply line on your new faucet or toilet. One trade-off worth naming: replacing a soldered stop means cutting the pipe, so a short stub-out may need extending. A compression or push-fit swap on clean copper is a manageable afternoon for a handy homeowner, but corroded pipe or a main shutoff you cannot find are reasons to call a licensed plumber.
