Shower systems are one of those purchases where the finish and the brand name get all the attention, and the dimensions get discovered during installation. That is the expensive order of operations. A shower system is really a kit of parts: a valve buried in the wall, a trim set, a shower head, and usually a hand shower on a slide bar or hook. Every one of those parts has measurements that either suit your space or fight it. Whether you are renovating a condo bathroom in Vancouver, updating a century home in Halifax, or finishing a basement suite in Winnipeg, getting the numbers right before you order saves you a return shipment, a drywall patch, or both.
What "size" actually means on a shower system
There is no single size number for a shower system. When you read a product page or spec sheet, you are juggling several dimensions at once:
- Valve rough-in depth: how far the valve body sits behind the finished wall surface. Trim only seats correctly within the depth range the manufacturer publishes, so this number rules everything else.
- Shower head diameter: rain heads commonly run from about 20 to 40 centimetres (8 to 16 inches) across. Bigger heads need more ceiling height and more water.
- Shower arm length and projection: how far the head stands off the wall or drops from the ceiling. This determines where the spray actually lands.
- Hand shower hose length: typically in the range of 150 to 180 centimetres. Too short and you cannot rinse the far corner of the enclosure or bathe the dog.
- Slide bar length: usually 60 to 90 centimetres, which sets how much height adjustment the household actually gets.
- Connection size: most systems run on half inch supply lines, while some high-flow thermostatic setups are designed around three quarter inch piping.
Measure the space before you shop
Grab a tape measure and record these numbers, in both metric and imperial, since Canadian spec sheets flip between the two constantly:
- Ceiling height inside the shower. Measure from the finished floor or base surface, not the bathroom floor outside the curb. Sloped basement ceilings and bulkheads count.
- Enclosure footprint. Width and depth of the alcove or stall, because spray pattern and door swing both depend on it.
- Wall depth available. A standard stud bay handles most valves, but a shallow furred-out wall or a concrete party wall in a condo may not. Know what is behind your tile.
- Planned wall buildup. Backer board plus membrane plus tile can add well over a centimetre. Rough-in depth is measured to the finished surface, so estimate the finished plane, not the studs.
- Existing plumbing locations if you are retrofitting, since moving supplies across a room changes the budget quickly.
Clearance rules, stated generally
Exact requirements come from the National Plumbing Code as adopted and amended by your province, and your local inspector has the final word, so treat the following as planning guidance rather than code citations:
- Spray stays inside the enclosure. The head diameter, arm projection, and mounting height together decide where water lands. It should land on a properly sloped shower base, not on the bathroom floor or the glass track.
- Head height clears the tallest user. Many installers rough in the outlet around the two metre mark, but that is convention, not law. If someone in the house is very tall, plan higher while the wall is open.
- Controls sit at a reachable height. You should be able to turn the water on and adjust temperature before stepping into the spray. This matters double for a thermostatic system with separate volume controls.

Five fit mistakes we see most often
- Ordering trim without confirming the rough-in. The valve gets set too deep or too shallow relative to the finished tile, and the escutcheon either floats off the wall or the cartridge sits unreachable. Every rough-in valve spec sheet publishes a minimum and maximum depth. Respect it.
- A big rain head under a low ceiling. A 40 centimetre ceiling-mount head in a two metre basement bathroom leaves tall users ducking. In older housing stock across Quebec and the Maritimes, measure the real ceiling before falling for the photo.
- Mismatched supply and valve sizing. High-flow thermostatic systems from brands like Aquabrass, Riobel, or Rubinet can be engineered around three quarter inch supply. Feeding one with half inch lines and modest water pressure delivers a disappointing drizzle from a premium head.
- A hose that fights the slide bar. Mount the bar high on the wall with a standard hose and the hand shower may not reach low enough for cleaning the base or rinsing kids. Check hose length against your planned bar position.
- Putting the wet wall on an exterior wall. In cold-climate builds from the Prairies to northern Ontario, supply lines and valves in an outside wall risk freezing. Where the layout allows it, keep the plumbing wall on an interior partition. Your plumber will thank you in February.
How to read the spec sheet
Manufacturers such as Kalia, Kohler, Brizo, and Vogt publish dimensioned drawings for both the rough-in valve and the trim, and those two documents together answer nearly every fit question. Scan for:
- Minimum and maximum rough-in depth, measured from the finished wall.
- Flow rate at a stated pressure, so you can sanity-check the head against your home's supply.
- Connection sizes and thread types for the arm, hose, and supplies.
- Which rough-in valve model the trim requires, since trim and valve are often sold separately.
- CSA or cUPC certification marks, which indicate the product is listed for Canadian installation.
