Yet prices in the category span a huge range, and much of that gap comes down to what sits under the finish. A shower system is really three material choices bundled together. There is the valve body hidden in the wall, the exposed hardware such as the shower head, hand shower and slide bar, and the finish coating over that hardware. Solid brass: still the benchmark

Brass has been the standard for pressurized plumbing for over a century, and for good reason. It machines to tight tolerances, handles constant pressure and daily hot and cold cycling without fatigue, and stands up well to Canadian municipal water, which is often chlorinated and, across much of the Prairies and southwestern Ontario, quite hard. Nearly every serious valve body from brands like Riobel, Kalia, Aquabrass and Kohler is brass for exactly this reason. Quality varies by grade, and reputable makers will state theirs. The trade-offs are honest ones: water spotting shows readily on brushed stainless, especially in hard water regions, and stainless-heavy systems tend to sit at the premium end. Zinc alloy: the budget workhorse, with limits

Zinc alloy, often called zamak, casts easily and cheaply, which is why it dominates entry level hardware. Used sensibly, in handles, escutcheons and decorative trim that carry no water pressure, it is perfectly acceptable and keeps a system affordable. The problems start when zinc is asked to hold pressure or endure years of heat cycling. It is more brittle than brass, and if the plating is breached it corrodes from the inside out, sometimes blistering the finish. A light, hollow feel in the hand is the classic tell. Zinc trim on a brass valve is a reasonable compromise. A zinc valve body is a false economy.

Plastics and composites: not automatically bad

Plastic gets a reflexive bad reputation it does not entirely deserve. ABS shower heads keep overhead weight down, and flexible silicone spray nozzles are genuinely the best material for hard water, since a rub of the thumb clears mineral scale that would clog rigid metal nozzles. Cartridge housings inside even premium valves routinely use engineered polymers around ceramic discs, and that is normal, not a defect. Where plastic disappoints is in pressure-bearing, heat-cycled structural roles: flimsy diverters and supply connections are the usual first failure points on bargain systems. Judge plastic by where it is used, not by its presence.

The finish wears faster than the metal

Whatever the base metal, the surface you touch every day is a coating, and coatings age differently. Chrome electroplate is hard, affordable and easy to clean, though it shows every water spot. PVD finishes, common on brushed nickel, brushed gold and some matte blacks, are bonded to the metal and are dramatically more scratch and tarnish resistant than paint. Powder coated and painted finishes, including many matte blacks, look superb new but can chip at contact points and are the least forgiving of abrasive or acidic cleaners.
