Shower Base Sizes: Match Your Space and Drain

The shower base is the part of a renovation nobody photographs, yet it quietly makes more decisions than any other fixture in the room. Its footprint dictates which doors will fit, its drain has to agree with the plumbing already under your floor, and its threshold height decides who can step in comfortably ten years from now. The good news: shower base sizes follow a handful of standard footprints, and once you match your drain, the shortlist builds itself.

The standard footprints

Bases are sold by nominal outside dimensions, width by depth. These six cover the vast majority of Canadian bathrooms:

One caution: nominal is not actual. A "60 × 32" base typically measures slightly under those numbers so it can slide into a framed 60-inch opening. Always compare the manufacturer's spec sheet against your measured space rather than trusting the name on the box.

Alcove or corner: let the walls decide

An alcove installation is bounded by walls on three sides, so only the entry needs a door or curtain. This is why 60" × 32" and 60" × 30" dominate the market — they drop into the space left behind by a standard alcove bathtub, with the framing and plumbing wall already where you need them. Converting a tub? Start from this footprint and save yourself a great deal of carpentry.

A corner installation has walls on only two sides. A square 36" × 36" base with a glass return panel is the straightforward version; a neo-angle base cuts the entry corner diagonally, which frees up floor space in front of a vanity or door swing. The honest trade-off: corner showers need glass on two planes, which costs more than a single alcove door, and the inside of a neo-angle feels smaller than its footprint suggests — it is a solution for tight rooms, not a first choice.

Match the drain before you fall in love with a size

Every base arrives with its drain hole in a fixed spot — left, right, or centre. The 60-inch rectangles are usually offered with an end drain because they replace bathtubs, whose waste sits at one end; square and corner bases usually drain in the centre. Your job is to match the base to where your plumbing already is, because moving a drain through a wood-framed floor adds real cost, and moving one through a concrete slab — think basements and many condos — means breaking concrete.

Skip the "left-hand" and "right-hand" labels while you shop, since they flip depending on which way you are facing. Instead, measure the centreline of your existing drain from the back wall and from one side wall, then compare those numbers to the spec drawing of any base you are considering. Threshold height and going curbless

A standard base has a curb — typically somewhere around three to four inches — that keeps water contained even with a simple curtain. Low-threshold bases bring that step down considerably, which makes daily entry easier and still installs much like a standard base. Curbless (zero-threshold) designs sit flush with the floor — wonderful for accessibility and aging in place, but not a drop-in swap: the base has to be recessed into the subfloor or the surrounding floor built up, and the waterproofing plan extends well beyond the base itself. If curbless is the goal, involve your contractor before you order, not after.

Acrylic bases and the tiling flange

Most of what you will shop in Canada is acrylic, and the major names here — Maax, Kalia, Kohler — each run their core footprints in multiple drain positions, which is exactly what makes matching your plumbing practical. Acrylic's appeal is straightforward: light enough for two people to carry upstairs, warmer underfoot than tile or stone, and easy to keep clean, with textured floors available for slip resistance.

The detail worth understanding is the integrated tiling flange: a raised lip along the wall edges of the base. Your wall board and tile lap down over it, so any water running down the walls sheds into the base instead of behind it. If you are tiling the surround, a base with an integrated flange is the better moisture defence. If you are retrofitting a base against walls that are staying finished — or pairing it with a panel kit — that same flange becomes an obstacle, and a flange-free model designed to sit against a finished surface is the right call. Decide what is happening with your walls first, then choose the base.

How to measure an existing opening

  1. Measure the width across both the back and the front of the opening, and the depth at both ends. Old framing is rarely perfectly parallel — shop to the smallest figure.
  2. Note what you measured to. Open studs mean the base and its flange sit against the framing with wallboard lapping over; finished tile or panels mean you need a base designed to butt against a finished wall.
  3. Check for square by comparing the two diagonals. A noticeable difference means your installer will be shimming and scribing.
  4. Record the drain centreline from the back wall and one side wall.
  5. Check the floor for level in both directions; bases need full, level support, so note any dips to be bedded out with mortar.

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace my bathtub with a 60" × 32" shower base?

Usually, yes — a standard alcove tub occupies roughly the same footprint, which is why this size exists. Still expect some plumbing adjustment: a tub drain sits near one end, but rarely in exactly the same spot as the base's drain. Over a wood-framed floor that is a modest job; over a slab it is more involved.

Do I really have to match the existing drain location?

You can move a drain — the question is cost. With access from below through a wood-framed floor it is a reasonable plumbing task; through a concrete slab it means cutting concrete. Since most footprints come in left, right, or centre drain versions, matching what you have is almost always the cheaper, faster route.

What is the difference between low-threshold and curbless?

A low-threshold base reduces the height of the step but still installs on top of the floor like a standard base, which makes it the practical retrofit choice. A curbless base sits flush with the finished floor and requires recessed framing or a built-up floor plus a broader waterproofing plan — best suited to gut renovations and new builds.

Do I need a base with an integrated tiling flange?

If the walls above the base will be tiled over new wallboard, yes — the flange is your best defence against water migrating behind the walls. If the base is going in against walls that are already finished, or under a wall panel system, choose a model designed for that installation instead.
