Tile can be cut, a vanity can shift a few centimetres, paint can be redone, but a base either fits the framed opening or it does not. Getting the dimensions right the first time saves a return freight shipment, a plumbing change order, and often weeks of delay. Why fit comes before finish

It is tempting to start with material and colour: acrylic versus composite stone, white versus matte black. Resist that for a moment. The 60 inch lengths matter because so much of the Canadian housing stock was framed around a 60 inch tub alcove. If you are pulling out a standard tub, a 60 x 30 or 60 x 32 base is usually the natural candidate. Never order on that assumption alone, though: framed openings drift from nominal, especially in older homes.

Larger rectangles, corner rounds and trimmable models exist beyond these standards. If your opening is unusual, search by your measured dimensions first rather than trying to make a stock size work.

How to measure the space

  1. Measure the finished opening, wall to wall, in three places. Take the width at the front edge, the middle and the back wall, at the height where the base will sit. Use the smallest of the three numbers.
  2. Measure depth the same way. From the back wall to where the outer edge of the base will land, at both ends and the centre.
  3. Check for square. Measure both diagonals of the opening. If they differ noticeably, the walls are out of square and you need a base slightly smaller than the opening, with the gap taken up during installation.
  4. Locate the drain. Record the distance from the back wall and from the nearest side wall to the centre of the existing drain pipe. This single measurement eliminates more candidate bases than any other.
  5. Account for wall finishes. If you are measuring bare studs mid-demolition, remember that cement board and tile will make the finished opening smaller. Spec sheets assume finished dimensions unless they say otherwise.

Clearances, thresholds and drains

Canadian building and plumbing requirements generally follow the National Building Code and National Plumbing Code with provincial and municipal amendments, and they do set minimums for shower compartments and the clear space around fixtures. The exact numbers vary by jurisdiction, so confirm with your local building department or your contractor before framing anything. As a practical planning rule, leave enough clear floor for the door to operate fully and for a comfortable, safe exit.

Drain position is the silent dealbreaker. Bases ship with centre, offset, end or corner drains, and your rough plumbing was set for exactly one of them. Relocating a drain above an open joist bay is a manageable job; relocating one set in a slab-on-grade basement floor means breaking concrete. Know which situation you are in before you fall for a base whose drain sits somewhere else.

Threshold height is the third dimension people forget. Standard thresholds keep water in with less fuss, low-profile and barrier-free bases are easier to step into and better for aging in place, but they demand more careful waterproofing and sometimes a recessed subfloor. If accessibility is part of your plan, decide this before choosing a size, not after.

  • Ordering by the old base's nominal size instead of measuring the opening it came out of.
  • Measuring studs and forgetting the finished walls, then discovering the base is a centimetre too wide once the tile backer goes up.
  • Ignoring out-of-square walls, which pinch a tight-fitting base at one corner.

Reading a shower base spec sheet

Every reputable manufacturer publishes a dimensioned drawing, worth two minutes of study before checkout. Confirm the overall length and width, and whether those figures are nominal or actual. Find the drain centreline distances from the walls and compare them to your rough-in measurements. Check the threshold height inside and out, the installation type the flanges are designed for (three-wall alcove, corner, or tile-down), and the certification marks: CSA and cUPC indicate the product is certified for use in Canada, which your inspector cares about.
