A mirror with built-in LED lighting feels like an effortless upgrade, right up until the morning it flickers, goes dark on one side or refuses to switch on at all. The good news: most LED mirror problems have solutions that cost far less than a new mirror, and several take ten minutes to rule out. Work through the symptoms below in order of likelihood before anything comes off the wall. Rule out the house before you blame the mirror

The most common "dead mirror" complaint has nothing to do with the mirror. Bathroom circuits in Canadian homes are typically protected by a GFCI device, either a receptacle with test and reset buttons or a breaker in the panel. A GFCI can trip quietly and kill power to everything downstream, so press reset on any bathroom receptacle first, then check the panel for a tripped breaker. If the mirror runs through a wall switch, confirm the switch actually works by testing whatever else is on that leg.

The second great impostor is the dimmer. A standard incandescent style wall dimmer feeding an LED mirror that was never designed for external dimming will cause flicker, buzzing or early driver failure. The cheap fixes, in the order to try them

  1. Power cycle everything. Reset the GFCI, then turn the breaker off for thirty seconds and back on. A hard reset clears more touch sensor faults than anyone likes to admit.
  2. Take the dimmer out of the equation. As above, external dimmers are a leading cause of flicker. A plain switch is a cheap test and often the permanent cure.
  3. Inspect the connections. With power off at the breaker, check that plug-in connectors behind the mirror are fully seated. A connector left half engaged at install can take months to show symptoms.
  4. Replace the driver. The driver, sometimes labelled a transformer, converts 120 volt household power to the low voltage the LEDs use, and it fails far more often than the LEDs themselves. If the LEDs are intact but the mirror is dead or flickering with good incoming power, the driver is the prime suspect. Any replacement should carry a CSA or cUL certification mark and match the original voltage and wattage.   • A second driver fails within a couple of years. Repeat failures usually point to moisture ingress or a marginal design, and a third driver will not break the pattern.
  • The math stops working. Once you are pricing a driver, a strip and an electrician's visit, a new mirror with a warranty often costs comparable money and resets the clock entirely.
  • You wanted better features anyway. If your current mirror lacks a demister, adjustable colour temperature or proper dimming, a failure is a reasonable excuse to upgrade rather than patch.

Three mistakes account for most wasted money. First, replacing the mirror when the circuit was the problem: the new mirror inherits the same tripping GFCI or worn switch and "fails" within weeks.
