Swap a burned-out incandescent bulb for an LED, slide the dimmer down, and there is a good chance you will get flicker, buzzing, or a light that refuses to dim below half brightness. Homeowners run into this everywhere from Vancouver condos to century homes in Halifax, and it is almost never a defective bulb. It is a compatibility problem between the LED and the dimmer controlling it. Here is how the technology actually works, how to diagnose your own setup, and when the job belongs with a licensed electrician.

Why LEDs and dimmers do not automatically get along

An incandescent bulb is a simple resistive load. A traditional dimmer chops out part of each alternating current cycle, the filament receives less energy, and the light fades smoothly. Nothing has to interpret anything.

An LED is different. Every LED bulb and every integrated LED fixture contains a driver, a small electronic circuit that converts household power into the low-voltage current the diodes need. When a dimmer chops the incoming waveform, the driver has to recognize what is happening and reduce its output to match. If the driver and the dimmer speak different electrical dialects, the symptoms show up fast: flicker, audible buzz, a faint glow when the light is supposedly off, an abrupt drop to black near the bottom of the slider, or a dimming range that only covers the top half of the scale.

The two dimming technologies you will actually meet at home

Most residential wall dimmers in Canada are phase-cut dimmers, and they come in two flavours.

  • Forward phase (leading edge): the older, most common type, originally designed for incandescent and magnetic low-voltage loads. Many LED drivers tolerate it poorly, which is why simply screwing LED bulbs into a circuit with a decades-old dimmer so often disappoints.
  • Reverse phase (trailing edge): a gentler switching method that many electronic LED drivers prefer. Dimmers marketed specifically as LED or ELV compatible usually work this way or can handle both modes.

Beyond those, you will see purpose-built LED dimmers with an adjustable low-end trim, which lets you set the minimum brightness so the light never flickers or cuts out at the bottom of its range. Larger integrated systems sometimes use 0-10V or digital protocols, but those are more common in commercial work than in a typical Canadian home.

A step-by-step compatibility check

  1. Identify the load. Are you dimming replaceable LED bulbs in standard sockets, or an integrated LED fixture with a built-in driver? Integrated fixtures, including most modern pendants and wall sconces, list their dimming requirements on the spec sheet. The word to look for first is simply dimmable. Plenty of budget LED lamps are not.
  2. Identify the dimmer. The model number is printed on the body of the device behind the wall plate. If you are comfortable removing the plate with the breaker off, note the number. If not, its age is a strong clue: a dimmer installed before LEDs became mainstream was almost certainly designed for incandescent loads.
  3. Check the compatibility list. Reputable dimmer manufacturers publish tested-bulb and tested-fixture lists, and quality lighting brands publish recommended-dimmer lists. A combination that appears on either list is the safe bet.
  4. Mind the load ratings, both directions. LED dimmers carry a maximum LED load that is lower than their incandescent rating, and many older dimmers also need a minimum load to behave. Two or three LED fixtures may draw so little power that an old dimmer never settles down. Count fixtures against the LED rating, not the incandescent one.
  5. Match everything on the circuit. Every bulb controlled by one dimmer should be dimmable, and ideally the same model. Mixing brands, or mixing dimmable and non-dimmable lamps, produces uneven brightness and flicker that no dimmer can fix.
  6. Test and trim. Once installed, run the dimmer through its full range. If the light flickers or drops out near the bottom, adjust the low-end trim if your dimmer has one.

Common mistakes worth avoiding

  • Assuming a dimmable bulb will work with any dimmer. Dimmable describes the bulb's capability, not a guarantee about your wall control.
  • Keeping a thirty-year-old dimmer because it still turns the lights on. It probably predates LED drivers entirely.
  • Sizing by watts alone. A dimmer rated for hundreds of incandescent watts may only support a modest number of LED fixtures.
  • Ignoring location ratings in bathrooms. A fixture over a tub or inside a shower zone needs the appropriate damp or wet rating, and placement rules vary, so confirm with your local building or electrical authority.
  • Putting lighted mirrors on a wall dimmer. Many LED bathroom mirrors and lighted medicine cabinets have their own touch or sensor controls and are not designed for external dimming unless the manufacturer says so. Check the documentation first.

When to call a licensed electrician

Swapping a dimmer means working inside a live electrical box, and the rules about who may do that work vary across Canada. Some provinces restrict most electrical work to licensed electricians, others allow homeowner permits with inspection, and requirements can differ again in Quebec and in individual municipalities. Check with your provincial electrical authority before opening a box.

Beyond the legal question, call a professional whenever you find aluminum wiring, common in some homes from the 1960s and 1970s, when there is no neutral wire in the box and you want a smart dimmer that requires one, when the circuit is a three-way or four-way setup, or when an integrated fixture is hardwired and misbehaving. An electrician can also confirm the whole circuit is sound, which matters in older housing stock from the Prairies to the Maritimes.

Usually the dimmer is cutting the waveform in a way the LED driver cannot follow at low output. The fixes, in order: adjust the low-end trim if your dimmer has one, make sure every bulb on the circuit is the same dimmable model, and if flicker persists, replace the dimmer with an LED-rated model from the fixture or bulb maker's compatibility list.

Can I keep my old incandescent dimmer with LED bulbs?

Do integrated LED fixtures need a special dimmer?
