If your foundation looks flawless in the bathroom and strangely orange in the car, the problem is almost never your technique. It is the light over your mirror. Many bathrooms across Canada were finished with whatever bulb was cheapest at the time, and inexpensive LEDs are famously bad at showing skin tones honestly. The good news: LED colour accuracy for makeup comes down to a couple of numbers printed right on the packaging, and once you know how to read them, fixing your vanity lighting is usually a one-afternoon project. That matters more here than almost anywhere. From November through February, much of the country gets ready in the dark, so for a lot of us, the bathroom light is the only daylight our face sees before noon.

How LED colour accuracy actually works

Every light source renders colour a little differently. The lighting industry measures this with the Colour Rendering Index, or CRI, a scale that tops out at 100. A CRI of 100 means colours appear the way they would under a reference source such as natural daylight. The further below 100 a bulb scores, the more it distorts what you see: reds go muddy, complexions flatten out, and the undertone you carefully matched in the store simply disappears.

One catch is worth knowing. The standard CRI figure, sometimes labelled Ra, is an average across eight fairly muted test colours, and none of them is a saturated red. Skin tone depends heavily on red rendering, which is tracked separately as a value called R9. A bulb can advertise a respectable CRI while its R9 score is weak, and under that light faces look grey, blush vanishes, and lipstick shades all read the same. For makeup work, high CRI plus strong R9 is the real target.

Colour accuracy is also not the same thing as colour temperature. Temperature, measured in Kelvin, describes how warm or cool a light feels: roughly 2700K is a cozy amber, 4000K is neutral, and 5000K resembles midday daylight. A bulb marketed as daylight can still have poor CRI. It will look crisp and blue-white while quietly lying to you about colour.

Alongside CRI, aim for a colour temperature between about 3000K and 5000K. Warmer than that flatters the room but hides redness you may want to see. Cooler than that can push everything blue. Many quality lighted mirrors now offer adjustable colour temperature, which is genuinely useful: you can check your look under warm restaurant-style light and neutral office-style light before you leave the house. Finally, make sure there is simply enough light reaching your face, delivered evenly from the front rather than from a single point overhead.

Fixing your vanity lighting, step by step

  1. Diagnose honestly. Do your makeup under your current light, then look at it near a window on an overcast day. If the two versions of your face disagree, the bathroom light is the suspect.
  2. Swap the bulbs first. If your existing fixtures take standard replaceable bulbs, this is the cheapest fix available. Choose LEDs rated CRI 90 or higher, all at the same colour temperature, and check the R9 value if the manufacturer publishes one.
  3. Fix the geometry. Light should reach your face at eye level from the front. A single ceiling fixture throws shadows under the eyes, nose and chin. A pair of wall sconces mounted on either side of the mirror is the classic solution, and brands such as Kuzco, Matteo and Renwil all make slim vertical designs suited to this job.
  4. Upgrade the fixture if bulbs cannot get you there.   5. Sort out dimming. LEDs on an incompatible dimmer can flicker or shift colour. If you add a dimmer, confirm the fixture and the control are rated to work together.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying on brightness alone. Lumens tell you how much light there is, not how truthful it is. A blindingly bright low-CRI bulb is still a bad makeup light.
  • Trusting the word daylight. It describes colour temperature only. Check the CRI number, not the marketing name.
  • Mixing colour temperatures. A warm sconce beside a cool mirror light gives your brain two conflicting references and makes colour matching nearly impossible.
  • Ignoring the location rating. Fixtures near a tub or shower need an appropriate damp or wet location rating, and anything sold for Canadian bathrooms should carry a recognized certification mark such as CSA or an equivalent.
  • Letting one overhead fixture do everything. Ambient light and task light are different jobs. Most bathrooms need both.

When to call a licensed electrician

Swapping a bulb or plugging in a countertop mirror is a do-it-yourself job anywhere in Canada. The line gets crossed when wiring is involved: hardwiring a lighted mirror or medicine cabinet, moving a junction box, adding a new switch or circuit, or installing anything close to water. Electrical work is regulated provincially, and the rules genuinely vary. Some provinces allow homeowners to pull their own permit for work in their own home, while Quebec generally requires a licensed contractor for electrical work. Rather than guessing, check with your provincial electrical authority or municipality before opening a wall, whether you are in Vancouver, the Prairies or Halifax. Not meaningfully.
