Set a freestanding tub in the middle of a bathroom and there is no wall to hide the plumbing in. Everything — waste line, trap, and usually the filler too — comes up through the floor, and the fitting that makes it work is the island tub drain. Its rough-in is the least forgiving part of the project: miss by an inch and you are shifting the tub off its planned spot or opening the floor twice. Here is how the assembly works, how to position it, what your sub-floor needs to allow, and why a good plumber will not quote the job without the tub drawing.

What an island tub drain actually is

With an alcove or drop-in tub, the waste and overflow hang off the end of the tub inside a wall or skirt cavity, usually behind an access panel. A freestanding tub has none of that. An island tub drain is a rough-in assembly that sits below the floor — typically inside a joist bay — with a riser that comes up through one opening in the finished floor to meet the tub's tailpiece.

Most kits follow the same pattern: a body or box mounted to the framing before the finished floor goes down, a trap below it, and a trim piece that finishes the floor penetration once the tub is set. Positioning comes off the tub spec sheet — nothing else

There is no standard drain location for freestanding tubs — some drain dead centre, many are offset toward one end. The only authoritative source for the centre point is the manufacturer's rough-in drawing for the exact tub you are buying. In practice:

  1. Fix the tub's position in the room first. Decide the clearances you want around it and mark the tub's footprint on the subfloor.
  2. Transfer the drain location from the spec sheet. The drawing gives the drain centre relative to the tub's outline; measure from your footprint marks, not from walls the drawing does not reference.
  3. Confirm orientation. An offset drain means the tub only sits one way — flip it end-for-end and the drain misses by a wide margin.
  4. Verify against the physical tub before the floor closes. Manufacturers revise drawings and cast tubs can vary slightly; if the tub is on site, measure it.

Sub-floor depth: where installs get complicated

The rough-in body and trap need room below the finished floor — how much you have depends on the floor construction.

  • Wood-framed floors are the easy case: most kits are designed to sit within a joist bay. The common snag is the drain landing on a joist — the fix might be shifting the tub slightly, added blocking, or occasionally a structural header, so sort it out with the framer early.
  • Slab-on-grade means forming the drain path into the pour on new builds, or cutting and chipping it into the slab on renovations — noisy, dusty work priced accordingly.
  • Condo concrete slabs are the hardest case. Coring a suspended slab usually needs engineering sign-off and strata approval; in many buildings the practical answer is a raised platform floor. Budget for that conversation early.
  • In-floor heating must stay clear of the drain opening, the filler rough-in, and anywhere the installer will drill anchors.

Connect and test before the tub is set

The trap and rough-in body get installed, connected, and leak-tested while the floor is still open. Once the finished floor is down, the tub is dry-fitted over the riser to confirm alignment, then connected. Some designs let the installer make up the drain from above, through the drain opening inside the tub; others must be connected as the tub is lowered into place. A heavy stone tub lowered onto a live connection is a very different labour job than a top-access acrylic tub — another line item your plumber cannot price without the spec sheet.

Access after the fact

There is no access panel with a freestanding tub, so think about serviceability before the floor closes:

  • Kits with top access can usually be tightened or resealed from inside the tub by removing the drain trim — worth asking about when you buy.
  • Above an unfinished basement or a dropped ceiling you have natural access from below; over a finished ceiling, a leak means opening drywall.
  • Never build or tile the tub in — it should be able to lift off its connection if it ever has to.

Coordinating the floor-mount filler rough-in

If the tub sits away from every wall, the filler mounts to the floor too, and its rough-in happens at the same stage. A floor-mount filler is a lever arm a metre off the floor, so its mounting hub must anchor to solid structure — blocking between joists, or an approved anchor detail in concrete. Position it close enough that the spout pours well inside the rim, far enough that it does not crowd the tub, and so the handles are reachable from where you sit. Check the filler's spout height against the tub's rim height — deep soakers need taller fillers — and lay out drain and filler together off the same marks. Why plumbers ask for the tub spec before quoting

It is not stalling. The spec sheet tells the plumber the drain location and orientation, whether there is an overflow, how the final connection is made, roughly what the tub weighs, and what the filler has to coordinate with — and each of those swings the labour estimate. A top-access acrylic tub over an open basement is a short day; a stone tub on a condo slab is a project.
