A heated bidet seat is one of the easiest comfort upgrades a bathroom can get, and in a Canadian winter the appeal is obvious. The catch is rarely the seat itself. It is the wall behind the toilet. Most bathrooms in this country, especially in homes built before the last couple of decades, have no receptacle anywhere near the toilet. So before you fall in love with a particular model, it pays to understand the bidet seat electrical requirements you are actually signing up for, and what it takes to meet them properly, whether you are renovating in Vancouver, Winnipeg or Halifax.

How a bidet seat uses power

An electric bidet seat is a small appliance, not just a fancy lid. Depending on the model, it may run a water heater, a heated seat, a warm air dryer, a deodorizing fan and electronic controls. All of that comes from a standard 120 volt household plug. Power draw varies by design: seats with instant, tankless water heating pull more current in short bursts, while tank style seats heat a small reservoir more gradually and draw less at any one moment. Either way, you are plugging in something closer to a kettle or space heater than a phone charger, which is why the outlet deserves real planning.

Non-electric bidet attachments exist too. They tee off the toilet's water supply and use pressure alone, so they need no outlet at all. They also give you no heated water, no heated seat and no dryer, which in a Canadian February is a meaningful trade-off. If the outlet situation looks expensive, a non-electric attachment is the honest budget alternative, not a lesser version of the same thing.

What the outlet actually needs to be

You do not need exotic wiring, but you do need the right receptacle in the right place. In broad strokes, a bidet seat wants:

  • A grounded, three-prong 120 volt receptacle. Bidet seats ship with three-prong plugs for a reason. Never remove the ground pin or use a cheater adapter.
  • GFCI protection. The Canadian Electrical Code, as adopted and amended by each province and territory, requires ground fault protection for bathroom receptacles. Water and electricity share this room, so this is not a corner to cut. Your local electrical authority or inspector has the final word on specifics.
  • Sensible circuit capacity. Many manufacturers recommend a dedicated or lightly loaded circuit. If the only bathroom circuit already runs a hair dryer and a space heater, adding an instant-heat bidet seat can start tripping breakers.
  • A location within cord reach. Cords on bidet seats are short, and the plug end usually exits one particular side of the seat. Check the spec sheet for cord length and side before anyone cuts drywall, and plan the receptacle low on the wall beside the toilet rather than across the room.

One more Canadian note: buy seats certified for use here. Look for CSA certification or an equivalent recognized mark on the product and its plug. Reputable brands sold in Canada carry it; grey market imports may not, and that can matter for insurance as well as safety.

The decision path, step by step

  1. Look behind and beside the toilet. If there is already a receptacle within cord reach, you are most of the way there. Confirm it is grounded and GFCI protected, either at the receptacle itself or upstream on the circuit.
  2. Check what else is on that circuit. If the same breaker feeds a bathroom heater, hair dryer receptacle or laundry area, think about load. A tank style seat is more forgiving here than an instant heating one.
  3. No outlet? Price the electrical work first. Get a quote from a licensed electrician to add a GFCI protected receptacle beside the toilet before you buy the seat. In many homes it is a straightforward job; in others, a finished basement ceiling or concrete wall makes it a bigger project. Knowing the number first keeps the whole upgrade honest.
  4. Match the seat to the toilet. Bowl shape (elongated versus round) and the position of the seat mounting holes matter as much as the wiring. Common mistakes worth avoiding

  • The permanent extension cord. Running a cord from the vanity outlet across the floor is the most common shortcut and the worst one: it is a trip hazard, it usually bypasses proper protection, and extension cords are not meant for permanent appliance use.
  • Ignoring which side the cord exits. A receptacle installed on the wrong side of the toilet can leave a short cord stretched across the tank. Confirm the cord side for your specific model first.
  • Assuming an old outlet is grounded. Older homes from the Maritimes to the Prairies often have two-wire circuits behind three-prong receptacles. An electrician can verify grounding in minutes.
  • Forgetting the water side. The seat also needs a tee fitting at the toilet supply valve. Seized or corroded shutoff valves are common in older bathrooms and are easiest to replace during the same visit.
  • Buying before measuring. Cord reach, bowl shape and the gap between the seat and the tank all decide whether a given seat fits your toilet at all.

When to call a licensed electrician

Any time a new receptacle, a circuit change or grounding work is involved, hire a licensed electrician and let them handle the permit. Electrical rules and permit requirements vary province to province, and some provinces, Quebec among them, restrict most electrical work to licensed contractors entirely.
