Two bathrooms can have identical tile, identical vanities and identical fixtures, and one will feel like a spa while the other feels like a walk-in clinic. Nine times out of ten the difference isn't the finishes. It's the colour of the light.
Colour temperature is measured in kelvins, and the number is printed on every bulb and integrated LED fixture sold in Canada. Lower numbers are warmer and more amber; higher numbers are cooler and more blue-white. Here's what each range actually does in a bathroom, and the two specs people forget to check.
The three numbers that matter
2700K — warm, incandescent-like. This is the colour of the old filament bulbs most of us grew up with. It flatters wood tones, warm-toned tile, brass and bronze fixtures, and it reads as relaxing rather than functional. It's the right call for a powder room you want to feel jewel-box cosy, and for an ensuite where the last thing you do at night is a lighting cue for winding down. The trade-off: it slightly yellows whites, so a crisp white subway tile can look faintly cream, and colour-critical tasks get harder.
3000K — soft white, the safe default. If you don't want to think about it, choose 3000K. It's warm enough to feel residential and comfortable, neutral enough that white surfaces stay white and makeup application is honest. It plays well with chrome, brushed nickel, matte black and warm metals alike. Most Canadian bathrooms are best served here, and most residential lighting lines centre their offering on it for exactly that reason.
4000K — cool white, crisp and clinical. Genuinely useful for colour accuracy: it's closer to mid-morning daylight, so makeup applied at 4000K looks the same outdoors. It also makes small windowless bathrooms feel brighter at the same wattage. The risk is atmosphere. In a room with wood vanities, warm stone or aged brass, 4000K flattens everything and reads institutional. If you want daylight accuracy without the chill, a common compromise is 3500K, or 3000K paired with a high colour-rendering rating.
CRI matters more than kelvins
Colour temperature tells you what colour the light is. Colour rendering index tells you how truthfully that light shows other colours — skin, hair, fabric, paint. It's a 0-100 scale, and cheap fixtures often sit in the low 80s, where reds go muddy and complexions look grey.
For any mirror you get ready in front of, look for CRI 90 or better. A 3000K fixture at CRI 90+ will show your face more accurately than a 4000K fixture at CRI 80, because the problem with cheap LED isn't temperature — it's the gaps in its spectrum. If a product page lists colour temperature but stays silent on CRI, that silence is usually the answer. The rule nobody breaks twice: don't mix
Mixing colour temperatures within one room is the single most common lighting mistake, and it's obvious the moment it's switched on. A 3000K vanity bar under 4000K pot lights produces a visible colour clash on the ceiling and walls — one pool of light looks yellow, the other looks blue, and neither looks intentional.
Keep every fixture in a bathroom on the same temperature: vanity lighting, ceiling fixture, shower pot light, toe-kick accent, all of it. If you're replacing one failed fixture in an older room, check what the survivors are before you order the replacement.
Between adjoining rooms you have more latitude, but sightlines still matter. If the ensuite door usually stands open to a 2700K bedroom, running 4000K in the bathroom means a cold rectangle glowing down the hall every evening.
Dim-to-warm and tunable white
Two technologies solve the trade-off rather than splitting it.
Dim-to-warm fixtures shift toward amber as you dim them, mimicking how an incandescent bulb behaves. Full brightness gives you neutral, accurate light for the morning routine; dimmed to a fraction, the room warms up for a bath at the end of the day. It's the closest thing to having both and it requires a compatible dimmer, so specify them together.
Tunable white fixtures let you select the temperature independently of brightness, either with a switch on the fixture or through a control system. Some LED products offer a field-selectable switch set once at installation — handy when you're not certain how a room will feel until the tile is in.
Whichever you choose, confirm dimmer compatibility before the electrician leaves. Integrated LED fixtures are matched to specific dimmer types, and a mismatched pairing produces flicker or a narrow, disappointing dimming range.
Putting it together in one room
A typical main bathroom does well with 3000K at CRI 90+ across the board: a pair of sconces flanking the mirror at roughly eye level for shadow-free light on the face, a ceiling fixture for general fill, and a wet-rated pot light in the shower. Add a dimmer on the general lighting so the room can drop to a low, warm level at night.
A serious makeup or grooming station is the one case for pushing cooler — 3500K to 4000K at high CRI, ideally lit from both sides rather than overhead. A guest powder room is the one case for pushing warmer: 2700K, dimmed, with a decorative fixture doing the visual work.
Whatever you land on, buy all the fixtures for a room at once.
